Week Two
Going into week 2, these are the things that I would change.
1. I would not use avatars unless they are connected to an assignment.
2. I would let students choose their type of assignment, but not the due date.
3. I would make the informative paper a group project.
The class seems to enjoy the discussions and the group work. Today, I talked about food deserts. The first part of the assignment was a 7 day food schedule, students were given $125 to feed a family of four for seven days. I thought that this part of the assignment would take less than 20 minutes, however, 45 minutes later, I had to stop this part. Most of the students had never set up a food schedule.
The second part of the assignment, students had use make a schedule using $125 and fitting the menu into the food pyramid. The next part of the assignment was to write a 7 day schedule using an $80 food stamp allotment and meeting the pyramid guidelines.
The shock on their faces, their moans, and several students said that it couldn't be accomplished. I asked the students to work on it and bring it to the next class.

First day of class
January 18, 2017
Today was the first day of my urban gardening class. I have to say that I am a bit nervous. This is an important project and I hope that my students feel the same way.
After class:
This was a wonderful first class. I have 16 students (I allowed an extra). Usually I don't do this, but I had a very persistent student. He emailed me three times begging to get in. He showed up for class and WOW, he is very knowledgeable about gardening. This was a good decision. The rest of my student base are young, first semester, gen studies majors. I have one student who is a pastor on he Eastside and wants to learn gardening so she can build a garden. One of my other student's own a restaurant.
The students seem enthusiastic and ready to get their hands dirty. I mentioned that this was a pilot, there will be a lot of trial and error and if they do not want to get dirty, this isn't your class.
I am allowing the students to plan their own path through the semester. Not sure if this is a good idea.
Students will need to complete the research paper, reflection and times writing. Other than that, they make he decision what to do.
I asked the students to design an avatar. They seemed to enjoy it. Our class conversations were beneficial and positive.
